Thomas Quirk is a Special Education/Humanities Teacher at Lexington High School in Lexington, MA. For the past ten years he has been researching and writing about civil rights issues that occurred in and around his hometown of Scarsdale, New York during the first sixty-three years of the 20th century. He has found that in the case of civil rights, past is not prologue. The struggle of humans to recognize and appreciate each others humanity continues today. There is always someone trying to bring darkness to the world and there is always at least one person to serve as a witness to let the light in and keep the struggle for humanity alive. There are no heroes on these pages, just ordinary humans who took risks to shed light on injustice. They did not always succeed and in one case they sought to bring darkness, but they lived rich lives that are worth remembering and learning from.
